SA work vehicle rules

What does a work vehicle need to carry?

If your people drive for work, the vehicle counts as a workplace. Here’s what SA law and the standards ask for.

Any vehicleUsed for work

A work vehicle is a workplace

Under SA's WHS laws a vehicle used for work counts as a workplace, so the first aid duty goes with it. Workers must be able to get to first aid equipment, and SA's Code of Practice says mobile workers' vehicles should carry a kit, secured so it can't fly around in a crash. Breaching the first aid duty carries maximum fines of $6,000 for individuals and $30,000 for companies.

Extinguishers serviced, kits in date

Portable fire extinguishers are serviced every six months under AS 1851. First aid kits should be checked after each use, or at least every 12 months, with a signed and dated contents list and nothing past its expiry.

  • Fire extinguishers
  • First aid kits
  • Fire blankets
  • Spill kits
ADGDangerous goods

Carrying dangerous goods

Vehicles carrying a placard load of dangerous goods must carry rated fire extinguishers, three warning triangles and protective gear under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code. Missing or faulty equipment carries maximum fines of $20,000 for companies.

Examples
  • Fuel
  • Gas cylinders
  • Chemicals
  • Paints & solvents

What safety equipment should a work vehicle carry?add
It depends on the job. Most work vehicles carry a first aid kit, and many carry a fire extinguisher too. A spill kit makes sense if you carry fuel, oil or chemicals, and vehicles with a placard load of dangerous goods have set rules for extinguishers, warning triangles and protective gear. Many mine and construction sites add their own rules. Our audit checks each vehicle against its job.
Do work vehicles legally need a first aid kit?add
The law says workers must be able to get to first aid equipment, and a vehicle used for work counts as a workplace. SA's Code of Practice says mobile workers' vehicles should carry a portable kit, secured so it can't become a projectile in a crash, and checked after each use or at least every 12 months.
Do our vehicles need a fire extinguisher?add
Not every vehicle by law. Vehicles carrying a placard load of dangerous goods must carry rated extinguishers, and many mine and construction sites won't let you on without one. If one is fitted, it should be serviced every six months under AS 1851 and held in a proper bracket.
Can you do the work at our depot?add
Yes. We come to your depot or yard and work through the vehicles while they're parked, so nothing comes off the road.
What does a fleet audit cover?add
Every vehicle, rego by rego: what's fitted, extinguisher tags and pressure, first aid kit contents and expiry dates, spill kit stock, and whether everything is mounted securely. You get a clear report of what's missing, expired or overdue.
We're a small business going for bigger contracts. Can you help?add
Yes. Head contractors, councils and mine sites often ask to see your vehicle safety gear and service records before you start. We fit out your vehicles, keep them serviced and give you a vehicle-by-vehicle register to hand over. Need safety policies too? We can connect you with our WHS partners.
Can this go on the same visits as our AEDs and first aid kits?add
Yes. Vehicle kits and extinguishers can be serviced on the same visits as your AEDs and site first aid kits, so there's one team on site and one invoice.
What does it cost?add
It depends on how many vehicles you run, what they carry and whether you need a fit-out, servicing or both. Send your details for a clear, itemised quote the same business day.
