Who we help

Responsible for a workplace? We’ll test and tag everything that plugs in.

Keeping electrical equipment safe is the business’s duty. The testing, the tagging and the records can be ours.

SA test and tag rules

What does SA law ask of your workplace?

SA’s WHS Regulations set out what has to be tested and what you keep, and AS/NZS 3760 sets how often. These are the published rules, not legal advice.

Is test and tag a legal requirement in SA?add
For a lot of workplaces, yes. SA's WHS Regulations require plug-in equipment in a hostile environment, like a workshop, commercial kitchen or wet or dusty area, to be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person. Safety switches have to be tested regularly in any workplace. Everywhere else, the duty to manage electrical risks still applies, and AS/NZS 3760 is how most businesses meet it.
How often does equipment need testing?add
AS/NZS 3760 sets intervals by environment: every 6 months in factories and workshops, every 12 months where cords get flexed or knocked about, up to 5 years for equipment that stays put, and every 2 years in the residential parts of hotels and hostels. We set the interval for each area of your site.
Does office equipment need testing every year?add
Not by law. SA's testing rule for plug-in equipment is aimed at hostile environments, and AS/NZS 3760 allows up to 5 years for office equipment whose cords aren't moved or knocked about. Leads and power boards that move around are usually on 12 months. We'll tell you what applies to each area after the free site check.
Who can test and tag?add
A competent person, which SafeWork SA describes as someone with the right training, such as a nationally recognised test and tag course. Our technicians hold the nationally recognised test and tag unit.
What happens when something fails?add
It comes out of use straight away. Leads and power boards that fail are swapped for new ones on the spot, so nobody's left without power. A faulty appliance is tagged out of service and listed on your register to be repaired or replaced.
Do you test safety switches (RCDs)?add
Yes. We trip-time test your safety switches through the power points and check portable RCDs, and the results go on your register with everything else.
Does new equipment need testing?add
New equipment that hasn't been used only needs a check for damage before it goes into use. We can tag it as new to service so it's on the register from day one.
Will it disrupt the workplace?add
Each item is only unplugged for a minute or two. We work through the site area by area and plan the visit around your day.
What do the records show?add
Every item, where it is, who tested it, the test date, the result and when it's next due. That's what the regulations ask you to keep, and it's ready when an auditor or insurer asks.
Can you do it on the same visit as our fire equipment?add
Yes. Test and tag can go on the same visits as your fire equipment, AEDs and first aid kits, so it's one booking instead of several.
What does it cost?add
It depends on how many items and safety switches you have and where they are. Book a free site check and we'll come back with a clear quote.
